do you remember dolly bell? (2019)
interactive sound installation
Variable dimensions. Video, microphone, hard-hat, speakers, cables, electronics
Do You Remember Dolly Bell? is an interactive sound installation based on the 1986 Emir Kusturica film of the same title. Displayed on a screen, a scene unfolds of two men asked to come on stage and have themselves fitted with hard-hats equipt with torches. They are then required to hold either ends of an opaque curtain concealing Dolly Bell's entry on to stage, at which point the lights turn dim and the performance begins. The audience’s ability to view the performance is intrinsically tied to the light pool coming from the torches of the two participants. As the performance becomes more provocative the two participants’ position becomes increasingly more uneasy; altering their line of sight would directly undermine the performance.
Do You Remember Dolly Bell? addresses the morality of agency and responsibility in communal experiences by creating an interactive sonic environment of the subject of concern.
From the speakers can be heard the soundtrack to the 1986 film but at a barely audible decibel level, demanding a degree of agency from the audience member to investigate and amplify the sound using the microhpone equipt hard-hat connecting to a PA system
